Charades for kids

Young children love charades because there is nothing to read aloud and no wrong way to move. Easy words are animals, everyday actions and films most children know. Older kids can switch to Medium; the kids-only filter stays on, so every word is still suitable.

  1. Sit in a circle. Players take turns being the actor.
  2. Read the card. The actor or a grown-up reads the word quietly.
  3. Act it out. No talking. Animal noises are optional for little ones.
  4. Guess. Everyone else shouts guesses.
  5. Next player. The person who guessed it acts next.

Tips for little ones

  • Let non-readers whisper with a grown-up who reads the card for them.
  • Turn the timer off, or use 90 or 120 seconds, for under-sevens.
  • Allow animal noises for the youngest players. It keeps everyone laughing.
  • Play everyone on one team and count how many you get together.

Good for classrooms

Teachers use charades for brain breaks and vocabulary. Put the page on the board in full screen, or print a sheet of 40 cards and keep them in a jar. For drawing games, try the Pictionary word generator.

Frequently asked questions

What age is kids charades for?

Easy words suit ages about 4 to 8. Switch to Medium for ages 8 to 12. The kids-only filter keeps every prompt suitable either way.

Can children who cannot read play?

Yes. A grown-up can whisper the word, or choose Animals, where most kids recognise the prompt fast.

Does the timer beep?

Yes. Turn on the timer, pick 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds and press Start. When time runs out it plays three short beeps, shows Time's up and passes the turn to the other team. Untick Sound if you want it silent. Phones in silent mode may mute the beep.

Will I see the same word twice?

Not in the same game. Every word you see is remembered on this device, so it will not come back until you press Reset used words. The counter under the card shows how many words are left in the set you picked.

Can I print the words as cards?

Yes. Choose US Letter or A4 in the Print cards panel and press Print 40 cards. You get one page with a 4 by 10 grid of prompts from your current filters. Cut along the dashed lines and drop the cards in a hat or bowl.
